Addictions can be a difficult issue, both for the addicted individual and for the people who care about them. Often people develop addictions due to using drugs, alcohol, food, shopping or gambling to self-medicate for uncomfortable feelings such as anxiety or depression. After a period of time, the addiction takes over and the individual begins to find their life spinning out of control. Rather than admit it, they continue using the substance that once seemed to give them relief.

Family members of the addicted person often try to help by making excuses, and doing for them. The responses and behaviors that people develop from living with an addict are often termed codependency. These enabling behaviors allow the addiction to continue by avoiding the reality of the effects of the addiction on the individual and the family. Often family members feel responsible for the problems.
